1. The core of IGK KidsIGK Kids

Prepare Before You Teach.
Less Teacher Talk, More Student Talk.
Less Waiting Time, More Active Learning Time.
Don’t Give the Answer. Elicit the Answer.
Correction Must End with Student Output.
From “I Know It” to “I Can Say It.”「知っている」から「言える」へ
From “I Can Say It” to “I Can Write It.”「言える」から「書ける」へ
From “I Learned English” to “I Can Use English.”「

We do not judge a lesson only by how much the teacher explained. What matters most is how much the children thought, listened, spoke, wrote and actually used English.

2. Lesson Preparation

A good lesson begins before the lesson starts. Run the 50 minutes in your head before class.

Check: the unit and parts, today’s activities, Reading Aloud, Output Training, ⑤ なにも見ないで, Listen & Write, the pairs, what an extra child will do, when to hand out and collect the iPads, what early finishers do next, where correction will be needed, and how to keep the children moving for 50 minutes.

Try the app yourself firstまず自分でアプリを操作する

Where is Reading Aloud? Output Training? How does Listen & Write work? Try it yourself first. If you still have questions, ask Mr.Toshi — early. Mr.Toshi also teaches, and cannot explain properly just before a lesson.

Check Early→Try It Yourself→Identify Questions→Ask Early

3. Pairing and Seating

Output activities are basically 2 students = 1 pair. How you make the pairs matters.

Why not best friends?

When one friend cannot answer, the other tends to give too many hints, wait too long, lead them to the answer, mark too kindly, or start chatting and playing. Kind as a friend — but then we cannot tell whether the child can say it on their own.

Seating = Classroom Management座席も授業設計の一部

If two friends play when they sit together, separate them from the start. Ask: “Who should sit next to whom so that both students can focus?” Build seats and pairs where problems are less likely — rather than scolding after they happen.

4. Pair Roles

Student A — SpeakerStudent B — Checker
Think / Retrieve / Speak Listen / Operate the iPad / Check the Answer / Evaluate the Speaker

Always switch roles afterwards. Because the Checker knows “I’m next,” they listen seriously. The Checker’s time is Learning Time, not Waiting Time.

5. If one child has no partner

Never let the extra child sit and wait. Do not seat them at the back where you cannot see them — seat them near you. They do Individual Output Training: Gym → Output Training, or Reading Aloud → ⑤ なにも見ないで.

6. Full Sentence and Eliciting

When the child has learned the target sentence, do not accept one word as the end.

EXAMPLE / 例
T: “How many rabbits do you have?” S: “One.”
T: “Full sentence, please.” / “Try again.” / “Can you say the whole sentence?”
S: “I have one rabbit.”

Let the child think first. Give a hint if needed. If it is still hard, give a Teacher Model. In the end, the child always says “I have one rabbit.”

Question→Think→Student Answer→Hint→Teacher Model if necessary→Student Re-output

Japanese Prompt → English Output

→ “Hello from New Zealand. I’m David.” For sentences practised aloud at home, the goal is not only to get it right after a long think — it is to retrieve them fast, like times tables.

7. Correction: Teacher Output vs Student Output

If the teacher says “I have one rabbit,” that is Teacher Output. Speaking practice is not finished. It becomes Student Output only when the child says the correct sentence.

Teacher Model→Student Re-output

The same rule applies in the apps: if they cannot say it, do not just look at the answer and move on.

Cannot say it→Check the answer→Say the correct sentence aloud→Continue

8. iPad ManagementiPadの管理

Explain→Distribute→Use→Collect

Do not hand out iPads at the start of the lesson. While you explain, keep them together on your table. Hand them out only when the activity starts. Collect them as soon as it ends. Hand them out again when needed.

Why not leave the iPads with them?

Most iPads block YouTube and games, but some features may remain on some devices. We have had reports of children looking as if they were listening while watching YouTube. Even without YouTube, touching the iPad, moving the case, pressing buttons or looking at other screens lowers focus. Not handing out an iPad when it is not needed works better than saying “Don’t touch the iPad” again and again. This is part of Classroom Management.

In pairs

The iPad lies flat on the desk between the two. Nobody holds it alone; both see the same screen. In Reading Aloud the Speaker basically does not touch it — the Checker operates it.

9. Teacher Monitoring

During activities, do not stay in your chair. Move around the room. Where possible, look at the iPad screens from behind the children.

Use English while monitoring

Foreign teachers speak to the children in English as much as possible while walking around. The talk with the teacher is itself Listening / Speaking Training.

What are you doing?Which unit are you working on?Can you say it again?Full sentence, please.Try again. What did your partner say?Can you say it without looking? One more time.

10. Early Finishers

Do not give free time. The goal is not “I finished the activity” but “I can produce the English immediately and accurately.”

Current Unit done→Previous Unit Review→⑤ なにも見ないで→Additional Retrieval Practice

11. Classroom Management

The teacher’s job is not only to explain hard. It is also to create a state in which the children are actually learning. A great explanation achieves little if, meanwhile, children are playing, doing other things on the iPad, chatting, or not taking part.

ALWAYS ASK /
Not only “What am I teaching?” but “What are my students actually doing right now?”

Design Before Discipline

Design the classroom before you discipline the classroom. Plan the pairing, seating, iPad management, clear roles, short instructions, continuous activities, early finisher tasks and consistent routines — so that problem behaviour is less likely to happen at all.

Children who keep speaking, listening, checking, thinking, writing and switching roles have less time to play. When behaviour gets worse, ask not only “How can I discipline this student?” but also “How can I improve the lesson structure so this student stays engaged?”

12. When it continues

If, after repeated prompting, a child still does not do the activity, will not try to speak, uses the iPad for other things, disturbs others, does not respond to guidance, or does not join the lesson positively — do not carry it alone.

Teacher→Manager→Mr.Toshi→Parent (if needed)

The purpose is not punishment. It is to bring the child back to a positive learning state.

Parent communication

Never use parents as a threat. Tell the child that school and home are working together to support their learning. If needed: “If this continues, we will talk with your mum and dad about how we can help.” We respond as an organisation, not as one teacher alone.

13. Opening and Closing Routines

Same Opening Routine→Today’s Lesson→Same Closing Routine

From October we will make the start and end of every IGK Kids lesson the same, so children know: “This is how an IGK Kids lesson begins. This is how it ends.” The aim is not uniformity for its own sake — it is that children know what comes next and move without the teacher saying “Listen. Sit down. Open this. Do this next.” to each child. The routine itself becomes part of Classroom Management.

🌅 Opening / 🌇 Closing RoutineComing soon / Mr.Toshi preparing ── 準備中 / Mr.Toshi作成予定

14. The two cycles

Student Active Learning Cycle

Listen→Think→Retrieve→Speak→Check→Write→Correct→Speak Again

Teacher Action Cycle

Prepare→Explain Briefly→Start the Activity→Monitor→Elicit→Correct→Support→Keep Everyone Learning

The teacher is not the centre of the activity. The teacher runs the children’s activity.

Reading Aloud → Listen & Write

Reading Aloud: “I can say it.” Listen & Write: “I can hear it and write it.” Never stop at Listen → look at the answer. Always Listen → Think → Write → Check.

15. Continuous Improvement

This is not a method to repeat forever without thinking. If you find that a different pairing, activity order or operation increases Student Talking Time, reduces Waiting Time, helps children focus, or is easier for teachers — share it with Mr.Toshi. Good ideas are shared across IGK Kids and go into the Lesson Plan and this guide.

Try→Observe→Improve→Share
Have an idea to improve this lesson? Share it with Mr.Toshi.

16. Teacher Self-Review

Not only “Did I finish the lesson plan?” but:

A good lesson begins before the lesson starts.

Prepare the lesson.Imagine the lesson.Know the app.Know the activities.Prepare the pairs.Control the iPads.Talk less.Monitor more.Elicit more.Let the students speak more.

We do not want lessons that work only because the teacher scolds again and again. We design lessons in which children naturally focus and naturally use English.

THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION /
Not “How much did the teacher teach?” but “How much did the students actually learn, speak, and use English?”
More Student English.
More Active Learning.
Less Waiting.
Better Preparation.
Better Classroom Management.
More Real Output.

From “I learned English” to “I can use English.”
